Started at Miller: 1978
As Bid Manager on PFI projects, I work in partnership with external organisations including facilities management companies, banks and lawyers. If the bid is successful I retain an executive role in the company which enters into the contract with the public sector client.
I joined Miller Construction straight from school. If I'm honest, the reason is a bit odd: I think my mother must have sent in the job application because out of the blue I received an invitation to interview with Miller. I had been considering various careers, including surveying, which attracted me because of the opportunities to be sponsored in further education while working part-time. So the Miller Construction role hit the spot.
I became an "Apprentice Surveyor" which effectively meant the "dogsbody" for a team of surveyors, with copious practical on-the-job training, while I studied for my professional qualifications part-time. The team encouraged me throughout and ultimately I achieved full membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
I have stayed with Miller for so long partly because I have "moved" jobs regularly - averaging five years in each role. I’ve been Surveyor, Project Coordinator, Manager, Business Coordinator and now Bid Manager. The emphasis has always been on bidding for projects while working in tandem with external partners.
I’ve been fortunate to work with and for some very professional people throughout my time at Miller - some with charisma who command loyalty, some whom you would rely upon in times of stress and others who have been an inspiration to me.
